Time Savers

November 01, 2007

My students pick up handouts from a small table on their way into class, which has eliminated the need to pass out papers. I recycle notebook paper (students are usually willing to donate the 'good' paper left in their notebooks at the end of the year) into 'quiz strips' by cutting it into identically-sized pieces - easy to handle, grade, and store. I color-code my five classes and use the appropriate color marker to grade each period's papers; when it's time to put grades into the computer, I can tell at a glance that I've got the right batch. Finally, I start every class period by setting a timer for 10 minutes of silent reading. I spend a minute taking attendance, and then I get to read too! (You could also use the time to quietly set up equipment or materials.)
