To help kids from becoming too excited in between activities, I often use a song to indicate a transition, with various selections depending on the moment and my own mood. I teach the students to immediately clear their desks or work areas when they hear a song. They are allowed to sing along or to move with the music, but must be in their seats with eyes on me when the song ends. It's a kind of 'Beat the Clock' (anyone old enough to remember that one?) that they enjoy. The ones who must move are able to do so and the ones who like to sing get a chance to belt one out!
