At the beginning of the year, I assign a number to each student based on last name in alphabetical order. When homework is collected, I put the papers in number order, and I instantly know who is missing what assignments. Sometimes I have my students do this for me. I put a sticky note on top of the pile with the missing students' names. The numbering makes it easier to record grades because the grade book is also in alphabetical order. The numbers are also a privacy code in the event I've written them on the board for whatever reason. When other teachers, students, or even parents come into the room the visitors don't know who/what the numbers are.
