If you work with primary school age children, here is a way to make them feel less worried about and less frightened on the first day of school. At your school's Open House, wear something distinctive. It can be a bright color, an unusual tie or piece of jewelry, a hat, or something with an interesting picture on it. Tell each child who visits your room that you will wear the exact same outfit on the first day of school so that s/he can find you more easily when s/he gets off of the bus. Children typically encounter a sea of adult faces when arriving at school. It is both difficult and scary to try to find their teacher. By looking at your clothing, the children can find you more easily.
