Have you heard of the Words Their Way program? Professors from the University of Virginia developed this. The authors are Donald Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane Templeton, and Francine Johnston. The premise of the program is to teach students spelling by attending to patterns within words. The program breaks spelling down into 5 different developmental patterns and provides diagnostic tests to determine what level each student is working in. There are explanations of word lists to use with kids, activities to do to help reinforce the patterns, and chapter long explanations of what each stage is and what spelling at each stage looks like. From what I've been told, there is even a CD-ROM that accompanies the latest Words Their Way edition that has lots of pre-made items on it.
