Your First Teaching Job Interview

April 27, 2005

I would suggest to anyone preparing to interview for their first teaching job that you focus on the positives. You may not have the teaching experience of other candidates, but you probably have other work experience. Focus on the skills that you do have that overlap with those needed in teaching. For example, good planning, organizing and people skills are essential for a teacher. Go to your school or district job fair and spend a few minutes talking to the representatives there. Get a feel for their needs. While you wait for a full time job, consider substituting. It’s a great way to get to know the schools and staff while gaining experience.
