Bring Literature to Life

July 09, 2014

I participated in a Hip Hop Initiative Summer Camp, where students loved to read because they were given the opportunity to bring literature to life through verse and rhyme. I used this same strategy in my teaching. Teaching science can get overwhelming with the vocabulary and concepts. So to draw interest, I would have them create skits, songs, poetry, six-section cartoon comics, even YouTube videos based on their reading. At this age, they are soooo into selfies (all about me, me, me) so create assignments that will force students to read the material in order to bring the literature to life by doing something that they can relate to or allows them to SHINE. This helps other students become interested in the literature based on what one student shared about what they read in the novel.
