Celestial Mnemonics

Found In: mnemonics, science

In primary grades, the mnemonic device for remembering planets is tough so we move to song. I used to teach this in 1st grade and they still remembered it in 5th grade.

Sing to the tune of “Johnny Comes Marching Home” or for younger members, “The Ants Go Marching.” Eventually, sing it as you walk in a circle revolving around the sun. Spin and rotate when you sing so they don’t get too dizzy!

Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; hurrah, hurrah (2x)
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are whirling and twirling among the stars
and we all go spinning around and around we go.
Jupiter and Saturn are next in line, hurrah, hurrah (2x)
Jupiter and Saturn are next in line, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto make nine [sorry it doesn't update to the new Pluto information!]
and we all go spinning around and around we go.
