We host Camp Read-A-Lot the last week of school to keep our students engaged. We have the students bring in tents and flashlights for reading in the tents. We make all sorts of pretend camping gear, including binoculars and cameras. We make tons of food such as trail mix, s’mores in a bag and hot dogs in a crock-pot. Your classroom will look like a mess, but your kiddos will have a blast!

I would like to try this activity with high school students, and it sounds like it would encourage them to find joy in reading.

My kids love classroom camping! We make a campfire with about 5-6 pieces of firewood and drape a 100-light set of orange lights around the wood. You're ready for campfire songs! A lunch table from the cafeteria becomes our picnic table. Parents donate food including cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, which we heat up in a microwave. I'm doing it in 2 weeks - the kids don't know yet!!
