Fun Ways to Engage Students During Classroom Transitions

Found in: Routines and Procedures, Transitions

Need to get your students' attention as they first enter your classroom or to transition from an engaging activity to another? As a cue for students to focus on you, teach them that when you call out a series of three math facts, they should collectively shout out the answers, then stop what they're doing to get ready for the next activity. Vary this by naming three U.S. states and have students shout out their capitals, or name three elements on the periodic table and have students call out their chemical symbols. There is no end to how you might use this idea across subject areas. Students love showing off and you have their attention for whatever comes next!
