Engaging ELL Parents

Found in: Language Barriers, Parents

I have started an informal class to teach practical English to my students' parents. Every Tuesday Night, I invite my students and their parents into my room. To prepare, I borrow all the iPads I can. Students sit on one side of the room using iPads and parents are on the other side learning English on the Smartboard. They have increased PTO attendance and the students are participating in more school functions. I am out a few hours of personal time, but I gain an immensely rewarding true teaching experience and personal satisfaction. The iPads were the draw. The students wanted to come, and their parents brought them. They do not have access to iPads or computers as home, so they begged their parents to bring them to school. Win, Win!
