Fair Grades for Group Work

Found in: Grading, Tracking Student Work

With a group of four students per group, I give each group four role assignments and let them decide who the leader (facilitator) will be. Then, the group decides who will be the task-master (keeps everyone on task) and gives tally marks for each helpful remark the students add to the discussion, the recorder who takes notes, and the presenter who shares the group's discussion or answer(s) to the class. Then, the students in the group write anonymous comments about each group member's participation, such as did they stay on task, do an equal share of the work, etc. These comments are always honest and are very helpful in assigning points or grades.
