Football Across the Curriculum
January 12, 2011
I do a whole unit on football with my class. We graph wins and losses using football helmets (we do bar graphs, pictographs, line plots, etc.), and we graph teams per region. We do a unit on probability near the playoffs. We also read nonfiction texts about football, so I have an opportunity to introduce nonfiction text features such as cause/effect. We write personal narratives about their favorite games and imaginative ones about football, as well. We learn about animals and adaptations through our study of mascots. We talk about U.S. geography and discuss how teams came to be located in certain cities. At the end of the unit we have either a Super Bowl party or a tailgate party.
