Good Read for New and Veteran Teachers

Found in: building trust and community; new teachers; parent-teacher communication

I read Working With Parents: Building Relationships for Student Success by Ruby K. Payne the summer before I started my first year teaching. My district gave me the book because they wanted all teachers to build positive relationships with parents. The book has six sections:

  • Working with Students' Parents and Guardians
  • Working with Parents from Poverty
  • Working with Parents from Wealth
  • Working with Overprotective Parents
  • Conferencing with Parents
  • Case Studies

I found all the sections to be useful. They taught me how to maintain good relationships with parents. I recommend the book for any teacher, but especially new teachers. I felt I knew how to work with parents before I read the book, but now I am much more confident.
