Helping Substitutes Follow the Routine

Found in: substitute teachers

Before my first sub of the year, I write up a "General Notes for Subs" paper that provides our schedule and all the usual routines. (I save it from year to year, so it only needs updating each time.) I indicate which children are pulled out when and by whom, which children go to parent pickup at the end of the day, my behavior management system, etc. Then, when I'm going to be out for the day, all I have to do is write plans for a sub to follow (mine own usually don’t have enough detail for a substitute).

Substitutes who used it (and some principals) have really liked having the information available. The substitute won't do things just as I do, but little kids do better without big changes in routines.
