Leaving Homework to Chance

To make sure she doesn’t get swamped with paperwork, Ms. Moran often leaves grading to chance. “I'll assign homework,” she says, “ then when it's due, I'll have a student who finished their homework roll two dice. If the total between the two is seven or if the student rolls doubles (about a 50 percent chance), the kids turn in their homework.

“The kids still get the practice that they need, they're engaged because they all want to roll the dice, and you end up grading about half of the work.”
