Organizing Writers' Notebooks

October 26, 2010

In order to manage all of the ‘Writers’ Notebooks’ that my middle schoolers create, we use a numbered white name tag that we affix to the cover of each notebook. The numbers represent the order in which notebooks get filed from front to back in a storage crate and are assigned alphabetically. Each of my language arts blocks has a crate. Students know exactly where to find their notebook at the beginning of the block, and students are dismissed by numbers to return Writers’ Notebooks to the crate at the end of the block. After years of waiting for students to dig around in a pile of notebooks, this system works very well. If I have to find a particular student's notebook, it's a snap to find!
