In my school, we use stories and passages to prepare for our state test. When the stories are long I let students read for as long as they can. As long as my students read for at least 15 minutes, they can take a 5 minute break while they read, draw, doodle, or write anything of their choice. Then they have to get back to the story.
We complete a practice passage on Thursdays and a test passage on Fridays. Students have 20 minutes per passage. In September we start with one passage, and each month we add a passage until we are up to six passages, which is a total of 2 hours. We do this because that is how long they have to sit for the reading portion of the state exam.
