Student Number Job Assignments
July 26, 2011
I number my students randomly and assign them tasks according to their number. I put numbers on the bottom of little Dixie cups and serve my students apple juice on the first day to reveal their number. Then, I make cards with the numbers on them, shuffle the cards, and draw from them to assign classroom jobs.
Late in the year, I allow students whose numbers are called to choose any job they haven't yet done, but for most of the year I assign jobs in the order called. My kids watch closely at the beginning of the year but soon relax, knowing it's fair. I love the fact that kids discover that some of the “unpopular jobs” turn out to be fun or that the coveted jobs aren't “all that” for them.
