Texting Students

Found in: Communication and Collaboration, Technology Tools

Adapted from an online discussion:

Two years ago I started using the text-messaging app GroupMe with a student organization of which I act as staff sponsor. It worked so well that this year we had two groups: one for all club members and one for just myself and officers to discuss things prior to decisions being made. Next year I will utilize a separate group for each academic class. I plan to put several safeguards in place, such as a written opt-out policy, the encouragement of all parents to join their child's class group, and a best practices contract with students.

The gains outweigh the risks. Being able to answer questions, foster student curiosity about the curriculum beyond the 50-minute class period and create an online community for your class is a vital part to my teaching today's students.
