NEA Reconfirms Stance Against Discrimination

A smear campaign launched by the American Family Association asserted that the National Education Association was set to "endorse homosexual marriage" at the 2006 Representative Assembly.

Either the group is intentionally misleading the public, or didn’t bother to check their information, but NEA has no plans to endorse same sex marriage and never did. At the Representative Assembly in Orlando, FL, more than 9,000 educators tackled critical issues facing public schools, teachers and students. That included multiple proposals to clarify existing resolutions and address diversity, discrimination, and civil unions.

"Religious conservatives are using misinformation and smear campaigning to attack two of their favorite targets at once: marriage rights and public education," said Reg Weaver, NEA president. "But delegates came to Florida to take care of business, and advocate for the welfare of their students. Campaigns of misinformation didn’t derail that."

Wal-Mart: Always High Costs. Always.

Think you just got a bargain on those rolled back prices? Think again. You may have just helped break unions and dismantle public schools.

Wal-Mart will stop at nothing to prevent its employees from organizing, even closing down the one Wal-Mart store where employees voted to form a union.

The company has drained billions from public coffers — money that could otherwise fund schools. And the Walton family, multi-billionaires thanks to Wal-Mart and Sam's Club profits, contribute heavily to anti-public education efforts like private school voucher initiatives and anti-public educations PACs. Read more.

The NEA Executive Committee has endorsed a national effort called "Wake-Up Wal-Mart" that educates the public about the impact of Wal-Mart on its employees, their communities, and our schools. As Back to School approaches, there’s a campaign to encourage shoppers to buy school supplies from other stores in their communities. Read more about the Back to School campaign.

Wal-Mart: Know the Facts, Get Involved

The NEA Executive Committee approved the Association's participation in "Wake-Up Wal-Mart," a major national effort organized by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), designed to educate the public about the effects of Wal-Mart on its employees, their communities and the economy, as well as the anti-public education activities of founder Sam Walton's family.

Several NEA state affiliates, including the Colorado Education Association, Delaware State Education Association and Washington Education Association, have adopted more specific recommendations in their state. Check with your local and state associations to find out what is happening in your area.
