Arkansas Educators Rally for Fair Pay
More than 100 Arkansas teachers and education support professionals on strike for a week after working three years without a pay raise greeted NEA President Reg Weaver at a rally in Marianna February 2. "When we heard some of our family members were not being treated like the professionals they are, we had to be here," said Weaver. "We are part of your family."

College Affordability Day of Action
At a January 11 press conference in Washington, NEA Student Program Chair Anthony Daniels joined calls for Congress to "reverse the raid on student aid." Daniels said high college costs -- soaring 41 percent above the rate of inflation in the past five years -- have become a barrier to students seeking a teaching career as young people are forced to choose higher-paying careers in order to make loan payments. NEA student members' messages were heard loud and clear, as the House passed a bill to reduce interest rates on subsidized student loans.

NEA Rallies to Protect Workers' Rights
Thousands rallied at the U.S. Capitol in December calling on Congress to pass legislation strengthening protections for workers seeking union representation. NEA President Reg Weaver spoke for the Employee Free Choice Act, saying, "Working families should be revered, respected and rewarded for the work they do. Instead, they are underpaid, underappreciated and under attack in the workplace. Our nation's workers deserve better."

Honoring the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
NEA leaders joined civil rights pioneers, dignitaries, celebrities and citizens from across the country on the National Mall in November to break ground on a monument honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that will be built between the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. In addition to commemorating the life and work of Dr. King, the memorial will provide a learning complex for future generations.

Educators Announce Joint Action Plan
to Address School Dropout Crisis
NEA President Reg Weaver unveiled a 12-point action plan on school dropouts at a Washington, DC, news conference October 3. The plan combines the efforts of parents, teachers, business leaders and lawmakers, using tactics tried through research and professional experience, to curb the nation's growing dropout crisis.
