The Knowledge Loom
Here is a Web site you'll want to visit often for teaching ideas.
The Knowledge Loom has deep, rich content that is well worth the digging. One place to start is by the selecting the "Spotlight" you want. (Spotlights are organized resources on selected education topics or challenges.)
To learn about successful classroom practices for elementary literacy instruction, we selected the Spotlight "Elementary Literacy." Here's the resource (both video and text) we found:
The Story Workshop® Approach
Devon Polderman guides a group of fourth and fifth graders through an oral reading of "The Bucket Rider," by Franz Kafka. The students take turns reading short passages. At times, the teacher asks them to act out the dramatic moments using their hands. After reading the story, the students remember the story more clearly. Learn more about the method and how it helped these students do well on standardized tests. Read about and watch the teacher in action.
To get to the teacher stories like this one, you have to take several steps. For this story, we selected a Spotlight -- Elementary Literacy; clicked on Go; clicked on Learn More -- Reading Instruction, Grades K-3; scrolled down to the practice "Teachers frequently engage students in oral reading to develop their reading fluency" and selected "Story." And found a very useful article and downloadable video.
