Letter to the Senators who voted NO on the Education Jobs/FMAP Package
August 04, 2010
On behalf of the 3.2 million members of the National Education Association (NEA), the students they serve, and parents and communities across the nation, I would like to express my very deep disappointment in your vote against cloture on the package to provide $10 billion to save approximately 138,000 educator jobs and fund an extension of the higher federal Medicaid match (FMAP).
Our nation is facing an education emergency, with hundreds of thousands of layoffs leading to ballooning class sizes, program cuts and the loss of the essential staff needed to help students succeed. Your vote reflected a troubling lack of understanding about the impact of this crisis on our students, our communities, and our nation.
Our members in your state and across the nation were watching this vote very carefully and are very disappointed in your opposition. I certainly hope that we will be able to count on you to support children and public education in the future.
