Letter to the Senate opposing the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act (S. 3100)

July 06, 2016

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the three million members of the National Education Association and the students they serve, we urge you to vote no on the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act (S. 3100) by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), which is scheduled to be voted on today. Votes associated with this issue may be included in NEA’s Legislative Report Card for the 114th Congress.

As educators, we encounter aspiring Americans in our classrooms and our schools every day. We witness firsthand the critical role family stability plays in student success. Yet a growing number of students live in fear that our nation’s immigration policies will target and break up their families, forcing them to choose between their country and their loved ones—mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers.

S. 3100 strikes at the heart of community-based policing efforts vital to public safety. Cities where local police focus on community priorities rather than immigration enforcement would be punished by the withdrawal of federal funding—specifically, the loss millions of dollars in Community Development Block Grants and Economic Development Administration Grants that could be used to build up communities, improve our nation’s infrastructure, and strengthen local government.

Moreover, this bill would jeopardize public safety by discourage people from reporting—or seeking protection from—crime or violence. Anyone, including aspiring Americans, should be able to report dangerous situations and seek protection from violence without the fear of being deported and separated from their families.

Instead of forcing local police to act as immigration enforcement officers, we strongly urge Congress to work on passing comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for aspiring Americans—many of whom are our students or the families of our students.

For the sake of our nation’s students—the future of America—and their families, we urge you to vote no on the Stop Sanctuary Cities Act (S. 3100).
