Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: K-12 Resources
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: K-12 Resources provides online resources for K-12 teachers and students.
For Teachers features educational activities and hands-on labs and kits. Classroom Activities have kits on plankton, ocean acidification, nautical knots and careers, ocean currents, and others. Ocean Conveyor Belt, for example, examines ocean currents for students in grades 8-12. Teachers will find lessons, worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and other needed materials.
For Students supplies interactives and exciting learning resources such as virtually joining scientists as they study the ocean. Students can also browse other interactive features, learn about Marine Careers, Student Research and Summer Opportunities for Children.
Interactives are grouped into Guides and Illustrations. One of the interactive Guides is for Alvin, a submersible vessel that has made 4,000 dives as deep as 2.8 miles and carried 12,000 scientists, engineers, and observers since 1964. Students can take a virtual tour of the exterior and interior of Alvin and learn how Alvin operates in the field. One of the highlights is a video of an actual dive. CO2, Shell Building, and Ocean Acidification, one of the interactive Illustrations, explains how excess CO2 may hinder the formation of shells in some creatures.
Ocean Instruments is a field guide to oceanographic instruments and what they measure.
Online Expeditions include video interviews, exploration of hydrothermal vents, and classroom activities for grades 1-12. The activities provide objectives but not standards.
