Molecular Expressions: Images from the Microscope
Molecular Expressions: Images from the Microscope is one of the largest online collections of color photographs taken through an optical microscope. The site not only features acclaimed photo galleries, but it also offers primers on optics and microscopy. The resources are aimed primarily at science students in grades 6-12 though some, especially the images and videos, can be adapted for younger students.
- There are tutorials for the Intel Play QX3 Computer Microscope and Olympus MIC-D Digital Microscope.
- The Online Activities For Students includes activities and inquiries. In activity 10, for instance, Investigating Special Properties of Light, students investigate many properties of light at learning centers.
- An associated Teachers Guidebook Page explains what students will do at each of the 6 learning centers and lists the required materials. Interactive Java Tutorials cover topics as varied as Newton’s prism experiments and the human eye.
Microscopy Primer can be read online or downloaded and printed in sections. The treatise covers the physics of light and color, the anatomy of a microscope, photomicrography, and more. It provides links to web resources and a bibliography.
Photo Gallery (The Molecular Expressions Photo Gallery) features images of DNA, amino acids, vitamins, and more. It also has a Movie Gallery. One sub-gallery is Pond Life with videos of protozoans, rotifers, algae, gastrotrichs, nematodes, platyhelminths, annelids, arachnids, dipterans, and crustaceans.
