Family Reading Night

Found in: reading, parent involvement

When I was a student teacher, we had a 'Passport to Literacy' night, in which everyone who came received a passport at the door. The kids and their families had to go to different classrooms, where teachers, parents, special community members, or local celebrities were reading different books. There was a map to each room, which stated who was reading and what the book was about as each room had its own theme. The goal was to visit each room and get a stamp. If a student got all of the stamps on his/her passport, they received a certificate, a small prize, and their name announced on the morning announcements the next morning. The kids loved the adventure, and their families were treated to great books all night!
