Using a Timer in Class

Found in: staying on task; transitions

No more lost minutes! I found that my classes were losing too much time transitioning between activities. Certain students had a hard time focusing on class assignments. I now have a small, inexpensive timer in my room. When we move from one activity to the next or when I give class time to work on an assignment, I simply set the timer for the desired minutes. I let the kids know how long they have to move or work. Using the timer has cut down dramatically on the time we spend transitioning. Students who, in the past, have taken a long time to get down to work are now getting right to it. The timer seems to add just enough additional time pressure and I don't have to say a thing.
