Family Service Night

Found In: parental involvement; parents, service project

My son’s school does one of my favorite programs for getting parents involved at school. The school calls it Family Service Night, and it’s based on an idea for a family service fair from the Web site Doing Good Together. A school committee sets up a group of small work stations, where families can complete a small service project together, for example: making bookmarks for the library, fleece blankets for the local neonatal intensive care unit, cat toys for the Humane Society, and placemats for Meals on Wheels. They also collected non-perishable foods for the food bank, and anything else that teachers need help with in their classrooms.
