National Leadership Summit

NEA's annual National Leadership Summit helps to develop activist leaders and prepare them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to lead relevant, thriving associations and to lead in their professions. Our unified, strategic, and interdisciplinary approach to leadership development reinforces and supports key leadership competencies in seven strategic areas.

The 2024 NEA National Leadership Summit in Chicago – March 1-3.

The 2024 NEA National Leadership Summit, NEA’s annual leadership development training,  brought together more than 1,600 participants  who were given the challenge of using those skills to build a broader movement to unite the nation in support of public education and unions.

Over the course of three days, Summit participants attended more than 130 competency-based sessions, all designed to deepen participants’ awareness of the NEA Leadership Competency Framework. The framework is comprised of seven competency domains – advocacy, communication, governance and leadership, leading our professions, organizing, social and emotional intelligence, and strategy and fiscal health. Together, these competency domains describe the knowledge, skills, and behaviors NEA every educator needs to be successful in their careers/profession, and association work.

The Summit theme served as unifying thread -Education. Democracy. Freedom. Our Right! Our Responsibility! The theme also provided an opportunity for participants to learn about NEA’s national initiative, Promote, Protect, and Strengthen Public Education Campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to broaden the network of allies, parents, and partners to build a stronger movement to support and strengthen public education. NEA partners, like Race Forward and Schott Foundation CEO and President John Jackson, played pivotal roles in this year’s Summit.

Beyond the breakout sessions, the Summit was a weekend to connect, find joy, celebrate students and educators, and remind participants of what is possible when educator and union members use their skills and power to fulfill the promise of public education to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world.
