The NEA Leadership Competencies are designed to inform, empower, motivate and equip association educators with the knowledge and skills to become effective leaders. Click here to learn more.

Leadership Competencies Instructional Modules

The NEA Leadership Competencies Modules articulate the specific skills and knowledge that contribute to effective leadership at every level. These modules use real stories from NEA leaders to illustrate each of the competencies. The competencies themselves were developed by NEA Leaders, for NEA Leaders.

Leadership Competencies Self-Assessment

The NEA Leadership Competency Self-Assessment was designed to help NEA leaders identify their own areas of strength, as well as areas where they can improve. Click here to access the Self-Assessment.  Please read instructions below to login and launch the self-assessments.

Sign in – Username: email address / Password: established by user
Note: If you do not have an account, please register by clicking on the “Register Now” button below the sign in area.

Upon entering the LMS Portal, please follow instructions below to access the LD self-assessments:

  1. Click on the “Visit LMS Catalog”
  2. Under “Browse by Category”, select “Leadership”
  3. Under “Browse by Leadership”, select “Competency Assessments”
  4. Select the competency assessment you choose to enroll by clicking on the “enroll” button.
  5. Click on the “launch” button to begin the assessment.
  6. To sign out of the LMS Portal, click on the arrow next to your initials located at the top right-hand corner of the page.

Note: You will receive an email confirmation upon registering in the LMS Portal.  You will also receive an email confirmation upon enrolling in the assessment(s).


Leadership Competencies Curriculum Outlines

The NEA Leadership Competency Framework was created with the realization that today's education leaders are facing some of the toughest decisions in the history of our association and public education. The curriculum provides in-depth examples of resources, knowledge, skills and abilities that will help leaders better understand what they should know and be able to do.

Case Study

This case study provides an overview of the process and tools - guided by the Leadership Competencies – that the Wisconsin Education Association Council utilized and developed to strengthen its Summer Leadership Academy.

Member Leadership Opportunities

This section is designed to provide suggestions for next steps in creating and/or developing opportunities for individual leaders.

  • Contact your State Association for potential leadership opportunities within your state or local affiliate.
  • Plan to attend the 2018 National Leadership Summit to be held on March 16-18, 2018 in Chicago, IL.
