Don’t Let Congress Ban Books

A good education inspires a passion for learning through reading a variety of perspectives. Congress is not a national school board and shouldn’t interfere with that.

Take Action

Tell your representative to vote NO on H.R. 7661, the "National Book Banning Act"

Educators inspire students' imagination and desire to learn. They believe students should have the opportunity to read a variety of age- and developmentally appropriate books that spark curiosity and send them on a quest to know more.

But H.R. 7661, a bill that should be called "The National Book Banning Act," would give Congress the authority to overrule the people who are in the best position to know what books and other learning materials students should have: educators in partnership with parents and families.

Under H.R. 7661, Congress would tell students what they can and cannot read, based on the divisive aims of extremists who want to distract us while they deny our schools full funding. Not only does the bill take aim at students, families, and authors based on who they are and who they love; the wording is broad enough to impact how subjects from art to science to health are taught and discussed

When local school boards, educators, students, and families decide together what books are in classrooms and on school library shelves, our students and communities thrive. Book bans are a threat to our freedoms and have no place in our democracy.
