In response to the pandemic, USDA gave schools flexibility, which basically put in place a universal free school meal program and it worked. Student hunger dropped dramatically.
Now, more kids are going hungry as benefits melt away, and as food and housing costs have gone up.
So many students fall through the cracks of current programs — either because they don’t qualify or their parents are intimidated by mountains of paperwork.
We can fix this by providing healthy school meals to all students at no cost to them, ensuring that they are hunger-free and ready to learn.
