Tell your senators to respect our right to vote. Tell them to stop this voter-suppression bill now.

The politicians who want to steal our right to vote are continuing their quest to throw up barriers that make it tough for us to register and to cast our ballots.

The SAVE America Act (S. 1383) is another attempt to disenfranchise millions of Americans.

It is a cynical “solution” to a problem that does not exist: rampant voting by noncitizens. And its intention is to drastically reduce turnout among particular groups of voters—including voters of color, young voters, and poor voters.

The bill requires in-person registration—with a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers—at state elections offices, whether we are registering for the first time or updating information, such as an address.

This would be extremely burdensome for many people, including those who live a long distance from elections offices, have no access to their “papers,” or can no longer register online or by mail.

The SAVE America Act would disenfranchise married women and others who have changed their names and have documents that don’t match their current legal name. The disenfranchised would include lower-income Americans, who are less likely to have passports, eligible voters who are hospitalized or have disabilities, and many others.
