Take Action
Stop Attacking Students
LGBTQ+ students are facing attacks from politicians at all levels of government.
Instead of protecting them and ensuring they have basic support, H.R. 2616 would require educators to “out” transgender and non-binary students—exacerbating the mental health crisis already plaguing this marginalized community. Policies like this hit hardest at the intersection of race, class, and gender—putting marginalized students at greater risk, stripping away safe spaces, and widening existing inequities in education.
The bill’s overly vague definitions of certain terms could also lead to censorship that undermines the essence of a good education: exposure to different perspectives in an age-appropriate manner.
Treating a particular group of students as less deserving of respect, autonomy, and privacy—and even, inadvertently, putting them in harm’s way—is the antithesis of educators’ professional obligation: fostering learning environments based on respect, inclusion, and most of all, safety. Join us to stand for student safety, dignity, and the right of every young person—no matter their background or identity—to learn and thrive without fear.
