New federal caps limit how much student loans educators and other professionals can take out before turning to costly private loans. 

While other professions were granted higher loan caps, education was left behind 

That sends a troubling message: that educators’ professional growth, preparation, and expertise don’t matter. 

While only Congress can lift the caps, the U.S. Department of Education still has significant discretion in how those caps are implemented.  

Right now, the Department of Education is asking for public comment on its rule that will implement the student loan caps.
