The U.S. Treasury Department has issued regulations for the federal tax credit voucher program and is seeking your input.
This private school voucher program will bypass voters and state legislatures to impose vouchers across the country, even in states that have resoundingly rejected them.
It contains no reasonable guardrails to protect students or state budgets.
We already know what private school vouchers do:
- Worsen student academic outcomes.
- Fund discrimination and exacerbate racial segregation.
- Primarily subsidize the education of wealthier families whose children are already enrolled in private schools, creating new fiscal pressures on state and federal funding streams that directly support public schools.
- Drive enrollment losses in public schools, reducing district revenue while fixed costs remain, which often lead to public school closures.
Champions of public education must reject federal vouchers and continue to demand fully funded public schools where nine out of 10 students attend.
Share your understanding of how vouchers hurt students, public schools, and communities and why we must pursue rigorous oversight and accountability until this federal voucher scheme can be repealed.
