Take Action
Urge Congress to support the Equality Act (S. 1503/H.R. 15)
Freedom and dignity are the birthright of us all. The Equality Act (S. 1503/H.R. 15) would underscore this fundamental principle by extending LGBTQ+ Americans explicit protection from discrimination in key areas of life: employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service.
The bill would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, and other federal laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity. It would state explicitly that “sex discrimination” includes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Most states lack non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics. This patchwork of laws leaves many students and educators vulnerable to discrimination, sends the message that LGBTQ+ Americans are second-class citizens, and denies many of our loved ones, friends, and neighbors the safety and security that we all deserve. No one should be discriminated against because of who they are or whom they love.
