Don’t Let the Trump Administration Move Department of Education Programs

Shifting programs to other agencies hurts kids and communities, and usurps the power of Congress.

Don’t let the Trump administration move education programs to other agencies

The Trump administration is moving Department of Education offices and their associated programs to other federal agencies—an unprecedented and illegal move that could disrupt funding to states and school districts. It could also result in layoffs, gut learning opportunities, reduce special education services and resources, and increase barriers to post-secondary education.

The administration began by moving career and technical education programs to the Department of Labor, along with some post-secondary education programs. Over the course of the last year, other education programs have been scattered across three federal agencies—the Departments of Interior, State, and Treasury.

Now, the special education office, which administers the $15 billion Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) program, is moving to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the civil rights office, which enforces anti-discrimination laws in schools, is moving to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Protect public education and our nation’s students. Stop dismantling the Department of Education NOW!
