Bring the celebration of reading and literacy into your classroom and school all year long and get ready to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NEA’s Read Across America! The 2016-17 resource calendar is now available. Order yours today! Quantities are limited. 

The 2016-17 Read Across America Resource Calendar is a benefit of NEA membership. NEA members may order up to 10 calendars by completing the online form. To request more than 10 calendars for an Association event or activity, or if you are not an NEA member and would like to request copies of the calendar, please see instructions at the bottom of the order form page.

Spreading the Joy of Reading to More Children and Young Adults

Poverty should not prevent any child the chance to learn and thrive in an environment that is enriched by the latest technology. Now, as part of a White House initiative to transform teaching and learning through digital connectivity and content, a free e-reader app is available to educators that provides access to thousands of digital books, including popular and award-winning titles, provided by major publishers. Award-Winning Graphic Novelist Encourages Kids to Read Outside Comfort Zones

Gene Luen Yang, a graphic novelist, cartoonist, and author – was recently named the eighth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2016 by the Children’s Book Council, Every Child a Reader (ECAR), and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. NEA Today spoke with Yang, who also taught high school computer science for 17 years in Oakland, California, about his new appointment and his plans to help promote diversity in children’s literature. >>Read the article

Hang on to your hats! It’s time to gear up for NEA’s Read Across America Day and go wild for reading! On March 2, tip your hat to Dr. Seuss and celebrate his newly discovered book, What Pet Should I Get? with creative acts of reading and learning for students of all ages. In this guide, you’ll find ideas for classroom-based activities and school-wide events that take advantage of students’ affinity for animals and Dr. Seuss’s talent for creating fantastic creatures.
