Federal Changes to College Accreditation Could Threaten Academic Quality and Financial Aid

What is school accreditation? Why does it matter?

Institutional accreditation and higher education accreditors emerged decades ago to ensure that federal funds supporting student learning deliver real value through high-quality programs.  

Accreditation also protects students’ time and financial investment. Through a peer-review process led by educators, accreditation holds colleges and universities to rigorous academic and financial standards and safeguards the quality of higher education—without interference from politicians driven by ideology. 

How has the Trump Administration attacked colleges and universities in the past? 

We’ve seen attacks on accreditation when politicians don’t like decisions and policies that institutions must follow as a result of accreditation decisions. 

• In 2025, the Trump Administration withheld millions of dollars in research funding from institutions over multiple areas with which the Administration found contempt, or from institutions that took steps to protect academic freedom and independence. 

• The Trump administration also attempted to create an ideological-based higher education compact that would have offered federal funding if schools adhered to specific ideological viewpoints and policies that the administration required.  

When there was substantial pushback from institutions, faculty, alumni, parents, and students, the Trump Administration relented. 

But their current plan is even more sinister: compel institutions to do what they want not by threatening the schools directly, but by threatening and placing restrictions on accreditors that control if an institution is eligible for federal financial aid. 

With this upcoming federal regulation, the administration is making it easier for new accreditors to be recognized with a lower bar to be eligible. 

The fear is that this will create a race to the bottom in academic quality, diminishing students’ ability to learn and the value of alumni degrees. This way, an institution may switch to a lower-quality accreditor. If an institution can’t get accredited by one accreditor, they’ll switch to one that will.  

Why is it important to protect the independence of college accreditors? 

Accreditors are kind of like home inspectors before a home sale. They do a full evaluation and verify that representations of the quality of education from an institution are true and the instructional and institutional policies are followed.  

Like home inspectors, accreditors help the government, students, and families have a good idea of the value or quality of what they are paying for, and that the fundamental structure and mechanics of an institution are solid.  

Accreditors ensure academic rigor, fiscal responsibility, and long-term fiscal health of the institution.  

How will changes to the accreditation process affect financial aid and the ability to go to college? 

The U.S. Department of Education, along with a quasi-governmental group (Council for Higher Education), establishes criteria for accreditors and verifies that those criteria are followed. The accreditors, in turn, can conduct a thorough accreditation review for an institution.  

If accredited by a recognized accreditor, the school can be eligible for financial aid (Title IV) funding. This is crucial for most institutions as this allows students to use federal financial aid including Pell grants and federal student loans. Almost all institutions depend on federal financial aid funding through Title IV of the Higher Education Act to be able to be financially viable. 

Without the availability of such federal funding, most people would not be able to afford higher learning, or be forced to take out private loans with high interest rates. In turn, many colleges and universities, especially those with smaller endowments, would not be able to stay afloat. This will mean fewer options for most students and make colleges education only available to the uber wealthy. 

How could political pressure from the Trump Administration affect academic quality?

The Trump administration has threatened to revoke recognition from established accrediting agencies that do not adopt its political standards. This creates a risky environment where agencies may be forced to choose between their academic integrity and their survival as gatekeepers for federal aid.  

Simultaneously, the Trump-McMahon Department of Education is making it easier for new accreditors to be recognized, including reducing the preapproval requirements. This could easily create a “race to the bottom” allowing for a lower quality of evaluation. By lowering the standards to be recognized, and lowering the time that new accreditors must be in operation before receiving approval, institutions may switch to untested, unproven accreditation.  

How is the Trump Administration preventing DEI efforts at colleges and universities?

The Trump-McMahon Department of Education is expected to prohibit institutions from collecting specific demographic data, like gender and race, that is helpful for tracking student success. 

Their proposal will likely force accreditors to remove any Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) consideration for enrollment. Without the ability to track this data, institutions will no longer be able to determine if they are providing access to all students.  

How do accreditation changes impact academic freedom at colleges and universities?

Academic freedom is the backbone of high-quality education and benefits everyone involved.  

For college faculty, this freedom means they can design their classes and conduct research based on their professional expertise rather than government demands. It ensures they can discuss complex issues without fear of political backlash and that they can take research risks to achieve potentially groundbreaking discoveries.  

For students, such an environment guarantees they are exposed to a wide variety of viewpoints rather than a forced political agenda. It also protects students from wasting money on low-quality programs that fail to provide a genuine education.  

For parents and families, this academic independence protects their financial investment in their child's future. If a university's approval rating is tied to political compliance rather than academic freedom and rigor, a college degree will likely not hold the same weight with future employers. This has a significant downstream effect and can directly impact younger students and their teachers.  

If higher education standards are compromised, the programs responsible for training aspiring educators will suffer, too. 

What can I do to stop the Trump Administration’s changes to the accreditation process?

The Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization (AIM) Committee is scheduled to meet April 13-17 and May 18-22, 2026 to discuss proposed changes to the accreditation process. All of the committee members are Trump appointees.
