WASHINGTON — NEA President Becky Pringle released the following statement applauding President-elect Joe Biden’s selection of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as his labor secretary:

“As labor secretary, Marty Walsh will ensure the interests of working families — Black and white, Native and newcomer, Hispanic and Asian alike — are at the heart of labor policy moving forward.

“As a union member and former labor leader, Secretary-designate Walsh is someone who understands that it is critical to have the voice of working people at the table when making policy. As an elected official, Mayor Walsh has been a champion for working families, advocating for a more fair and equitable economy.

“Through his experiences, Mayor Walsh understands how important it is to have a labor secretary focused on protecting working families, enabling working Americans to earn a living wage, ensuring everyone has safe working conditions, and advocating for workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain— rights that educators rely on to advocate for stronger public schools for their students and communities.

“America’s educators look forward to partnering with Secretary- designate Walsh to help President-elect Biden restore the middle class, build back a better and more equitable economy, and unrig the economy so everyone can achieve the American Dream.”
