National Higher Education Pledge

Add your voice by taking our pledge! Reject austerity measures in higher education that hurt students.

  • Drastic budget cuts that eliminate academic programs and student services.

  • Massive layoffs and furloughs of caring, dedicated faculty and staff.

  • Big tuition hikes on students and families who can't afford to pay—but also can't afford to throw away their shot at the American Dream.

This is what austerity, or a lack of public investment in public higher education, looks like on our college and university campuses—and we refuse to accept it.

Our work as higher education faculty, staff and graduate assistants is fundamental to the well-being of this nation. As NEA members, we embrace the mission of our national union: “to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world” and we stand in the gaps that inequitable systems have created and fostered.

We teach our students to participate in democracy, to succeed in our nation's workplaces, to have ideas and innovate solutions.

As such, we pledge to reject austerity measures that damage our institutions and decrease opportunities for our students, and we pledge to raise our voices together to stand up for the public good that is public higher education.
