WASHINGTON— The National Education Association is leading a national initiative to establish centers of excellence that focus on accelerating student learning.
This initiative, called the Accelerating Student Learning Program, is driven by the urgent need to address the ongoing opportunity gaps and lost learning opportunities that continue to affect students nationwide following the pandemic, impacting students of color disproportionately.
“This initiative on accelerating student success holds immense potential to positively transform the education landscape for students across the country,” said NEA President Becky Pringle. “By focusing on innovative strategies, collaboration, personalized learning approaches and equitable access to resources, this initiative can help address the numerous challenges schools, students and educators face.”
To combat these growing issues, state affiliates across the country met with NEA to create teams composed of teacher-leaders, paraeducators, parents and administrators, who studied current research and tested models for accelerating student learning. Using this information, teams developed plans to meet the varying academic and socio-emotional needs of their school communities.
The Accelerating Student Learning Program comes at a crucial moment in the nation's educational landscape. Even in the face of evolving challenges both caused and worsened by the pandemic, educators and the union are stepping up to the plate to show unwavering dedication to their students’ learning and needs. The program highlights the transformative role that educators play in spearheading positive change and the need for strong partnerships between unions, school districts and families.
The program is being piloted in ten districts around the country. Through their efforts and teamwork, educators and partners are setting a powerful example for school districts across the country, demonstrating their steadfast commitment to supporting student learning and ensuring that each student receives the support they need. This program will become a driving force in the pursuit of equity and opportunity for all students, empowering them to thrive in the classroom.
