Immigration

We need a fair immigration process that upholds America’s values and commitment to liberty and justice for all.

Dreamers, DACA recipients, individuals with temporary protected status, and other immigrants play a vital role in our economy and everyday lives.

We need an immigration system that is humane, functional, and just. NEA supports broad, inclusive legislation with multiple pathways to citizenship that prioritize keeping families together.

Bills in Congress

Learn NEA's position on pending legislation related to public education, and take action to protect our schools

  • Oppose

    S 2 Secure America Act www.congress.gov

    Introduced on May 20, 2026

This reconciliation bill provides an additional $70 billion to escalate violent immigration enforcement. The consequences of this approach are clear, and they are unacceptable. Students are sitting in classrooms fearful that their families could be torn apart, parents are disengaging from school events due to safety concerns, and communities are being destabilized—conditions incompatible with learning.

  • Support

S 4389 Humane Enforcement and Legal Protections (HELP) for Separated Children Act www.congress.gov

    Introduced on April 27, 2026

This bill would protect children affected by immigration enforcement actions or proceedings against their parents.

  • Support

HR 7346 Drain ICE Act www.congress.gov

    Introduced on February 4, 2026

This bill would rescind the $75 billion in funding allocated to ICE in the July 2025 H.R. 1 reconciliation bill. Reclaiming these funds is the first step toward restoring programs that make life more affordable for working families.

Immigration is in Build Back Better because the public, Democrats in Congress, and the President of the United States recognize undocumented immigrants as an integral part of the United States of America.”
