What’s Going On With Student Loans?
If you have federal student loans—or are planning to take them out—you need to know about new changes by the Trump administration that may make you ineligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), or the erasure of your student loan balance after 120 qualifying monthly payments. The biggest change? The Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan has officially ended. Now, roughly 7 million people need to choose a new payment plan. If you don’t, the administration will automatically put you in the standard payment plan, which does not qualify for PSLF.
NEA members have two ways to switch their plans, either through their StudentAid.gov account or through the NEA Student Debt Navigator, which is free for NEA members. The navigator can help you compare income-driven payment plans to the standard payment plan, and figure out what is best for your family based on your loan balance, family income, and other factors. With the elimination of SAVE, borrowers have four income-driven options. Is one of them best for you? Find out at nea.org/StudentDebtNavigator.

CALL FOR 2027 NOMINATIONS
Know of an individual, organization, or affiliate that champions racial and social justice and civil rights within their community? Show your support and uplift their good work to the national stage by submitting a nomination for a 2027 Human and Civil Rights (HCR) Award. Honorees are recognized during the annual HCR Awards program, held in July, prior to NEA’s Representative Assembly.
- Identify and honor exemplary individuals, organizations, and affiliates for their contributions to human and civil rights, and racial and social justice.
- Celebrate NEA’s multicultural roots and commitment to justice.
- Recognize today’s human and civil rights victories and chart the path forward.
- Honor the rich legacy of the merger between the American Teachers Association (ATA) and NEA, from whence the HCR Awards program began.
The work of civil rights and social justice heroes is as critical today as it was yesterday. Let’s work together to remind everyone that the cause endures, the struggle goes on, and hope still lives!
