A retrenchment or restructuring event can affect staff and faculty jobs and positions and result in changes to or elimination of student services and academic programs. Table 2 displays details of the extent and magnitude of the changes in programs and staffing at the colleges examined.

In addition to staffing and programmatic changes, retrenchment and restructuring can affect students, staff, faculty, and programs in additional ways.

  • City College of San Francisco (CA): Faculty accepted a 9 percent pay decrease to avoid more layoffs; $450 million of maintenance was deferred.

  • Kirkwood Community College (IA): Closed two of their 14 locations and plans to sell one campus and relocate operations to a regional center.

  • Genesee Community College (NY): Froze travel and training; deferred capital projects other than critical maintenance issues; deferred printer replacement purchases, office supplies, contractual services, and facility improvements; froze hiring of adjunct professors; froze salary increases.

  • Linn-Benton Community College (OR): Increased tuition by 6 percent.
