We Are NEA
Be part of the movement. Becoming a member of the National Education Association connects you with a movement of educators supporting each other. We are a community that will help you advocate for the funding, resources, and support you and your students deserve. This includes:
- Having a voice at the table to advocate for improved working and student learning conditions, including winning increased pay and benefits

- Joining forces to make a difference in the social justice issues that matter most to you and that affect your students’ lives

How to Join the Association
Types of Membership
NEA members are as diverse as the students we represent, but united in our purpose: championing justice and excellence in public education. NEA members fall into six categories, if you have questions as to which type applies to you, see the definitions below.
Active and Retired Educators
Active and retired educators can join using the above map tool or by finding their State Affiliate here.
- Active Professional/Certified
For individuals employed in public education in a certified position in a public school district or institution of higher learning or whose job is primarily education. Learn about our resources for classroom teachers.
- Active Education Support Professional (ESP)/Classified
For individuals who are employed in public education in a support position in a public school district or institution of higher learning or whose job is primarily in education. Learn about our resources for ESPs.
For individuals no longer employed in public education and who are eligible to receive a pension from an educational employment institution. Learn more about NEA-Retired.
- Pre-Retired Subscription
For individuals who are currently working and are an NEA Active Professional or ESP, you may join as a pre-retired member in advance of retirement.
** If you are an educator employed at any DoDEA school or an Education Support Personnel (ESP) employees at a DDESS location, you can join the Federal Education Association here.
Aspiring Educators and Community Allies
Aspiring Educators can join NEA here. If you’re not an active educator but want to support NEA’s mission to give every child a quality education regardless of family income or place of residence, become a Community Ally.
- Aspiring Educator Membership
Aspiring Educator Membership is available if you are enrolled in a post-secondary program that is preparatory for employment in a position that will make you eligible for Active (educator) membership in the NEA. Learn more about our Aspiring Educator program.

Having a network of aspiring and current educators has opened my eyes to new opportunities, relationships, and ideas. While the union offers so many resources and opportunities, finding my union family has been the greatest benefit of joining.
