U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator:
On behalf of our 3 million members and the 50 million students they serve, we urge you to VOTE YES on Casey Pitts’ nomination for United States District Court Judge, Northern District of California. Votes on this issue may be included in NEA’s Report Card for the 118th Congress.
One of our nation’s leading civil and workers’ rights advocates, Mr. Pitts has spent his career fighting for economic justice. He graduated with honors from Yale College summa cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. At Yale Law School, he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal and managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law and Feminism. After graduating from law school in 2008, he clerked for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
As an associate and later a partner at Altshuler Berzon LLP, one of the country’s most respected union-side labor and employment law firms, Mr. Pitts has litigated in federal courts around the country, including in California, and argued appellate cases in multiple state and federal courts, including before panels of the Ninth Circuit. He has won major victories in cases involving workers’ rights, employment, voting and civil rights, freedom of speech, and constitutional law. Judges on the Ninth Circuit selected him to serve as an appellate lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference.
If confirmed, Mr. Pitts will be the first openly LGBTQ+ judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. He will also be the only judge on the court who has dedicated his career to representing workers, consumers, and labor organizations in the fight for economic justice. NEA strongly believes this unique perspective will be helpful to Mr. Pitts’ service as district judge.
We urge you vote to VOTE YES on Casey Pitts’ nomination for United States District Court Judge, Northern District of California.
Sincerely,
Marc Egan
